Luxembourg AI Factory and DFKI boost EU AI ambitions
The Luxembourg AI Factory and the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) sign MoU to advance joint AI research and innovation across Europe.
The Luxembourg AI Factory has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DFKI, one of Europe’s leading AI research centres. The agreement marks a first milestone and will be followed by a more detailed contract defining the cooperation framework.
Contributing to the EU vision of an emerging AI continent
This collaboration is a strategic step not only for Luxembourg, but for European AI efforts in general. The European Commission’s AI Continent Action Plan seeks to build a connected network of AI Factories and future AI Gigafactories, giving startups, SMEs, industry and researchers access to AI‑optimised supercomputing and shared data resources to accelerate trustworthy AI development and deployment.
By bringing together complementary expertise and infrastructure, this cooperation contributes to building this wider European fabric of AI capabilities. It positions both partners as active drivers of an emerging “AI continent” and reinforces Luxembourg’s contribution to the European AI landscape.
Areas of cooperation and joint activities
This partnership covers a broad range of intended cooperation activities. Both organisations aim to exchange research outcomes relevant to their respective projects and the agreement will ensure secure handling of confidential information. DFKI intends to complement the expertise of the Luxembourg AI Factory by supporting algorithmic development, training monitoring and talent sourcing, and by contributing to new services enabled by AI systems. Likewise, the Luxembourg AI Factory seeks to transition relevant DFKI research outputs into scalable applications or products and to provide access to its facilities for jointly agreed activities.
The scope also includes co-hosted events, webinars and workshops, as well as co-marketing initiatives and shared branding opportunities. The partners plan to collaborate on referrals and client development strategies, and they will either provide access to or co-create training, tools and technologies. Their cooperation will also extend to joint participation in grants or tenders and knowledge exchange through user-centred mentoring programmes.
Benefits for both partners
For the Luxembourg AI Factory, the agreement supports its strategy to enlarge its user base, strengthen its visibility and expand capabilities. DFKI brings expertise that complements the consortium, particularly in algorithmic development and applied AI innovation. Its network of spin-offs and partner companies also has the potential to become an extended user community for the Luxembourg AI Factory. This creates opportunities to transition DFKI research into scalable services and to provide SMEs in Luxembourg with access to advanced AI support. The protection of intellectual property is a key pillar of the agreement in this regard.
In addition, DFKI can benefit from access to the MeluXina supercomputer for their activities and training needs, LNDS data resources and University of Luxembourg research capabilities to strengthen their ability to experiment and develop applied solutions. The secure exchange of research data and sensitive information will also facilitate faster and more efficient progress on joint activities.
Strengthening the ecosystem in Luxembourg and Europe
The agreement consolidates the Luxembourg AI Factory’s partnerships and represents another step forward at European level, strengthening the continent’s ability to translate research into innovation. The Luxembourg AI Factory is actively developing further collaborations to reinforce this European positioning. Today’s announcement sets the tone for a growing network of strategic alliances that will underpin Luxembourg’s role in Europe’s evolving AI landscape.
