Why Luxembourg scores highly on life satisfaction

Luxembourg's strong performance reflects several factors closely linked to the report's methodology:

  • High economic output: Luxembourg's GDP per capita remains among the highest in the world, a key variable in the report's analysis.
  • Robust social support systems: residents benefit from strong public services and social safety nets.
  • Long healthy life expectancy: access to excellent healthcare contributes directly to well-being.
  • Freedom to make life choices: Luxembourg's open, multicultural society supports personal autonomy and diversity.

Luxembourg reached a life evaluation score of 7.063 on a scale of 0 to 10 on the World Happiness ranking. The country also ranks 2nd globally for work-life balance, a factor that contributes directly to residents' life satisfaction.

How Luxembourg compares in Europe

Finland leads the 2026 ranking, followed by other European Nordic countries, Israel and Costa Rica. Within Europe, Luxembourg's 9th place positions it well ahead of its immediate neighbours:

  • Belgium: 14th
  • Germany: 17th
  • France: 35th

The country's 95% confidence interval for its rank lies between 8th and 17th place.

What the World Happiness Report measures

The World Happiness Report is an annual publication supported by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. It ranks countries based on residents' self-assessed life satisfaction, using a scale from 0 to 10. These evaluations are analysed alongside six key factors: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity and perceptions of corruption.
