Luxembourg is set to strengthen its position as a European leader in advanced materials innovation with the announcement that OCSiAl will build the world’s largest graphene nanotube production centre in Differdange. This landmark deeptech investment strengthens Luxembourg’s innovation ecosystem and reinforces its role in shaping Europe’s industrial future.
Driving Europe’s industrial future with advanced materials
Graphene nanotubes – sometimes called single-wall carbon nanotubes – are among the most promising materials of the 21st century. Just one atom thick, these tubular structures combine extraordinary strength with exceptional electrical conductivity. They are 100 times stronger than steel yet lighter than aluminium, and when integrated into other materials, they create a conductive skeleton that dramatically improves performance. Applications range from safer, longer-lasting batteries and lightweight automotive components to durable tires and high-performance electronics.
The launch of this future production centre in Differdange perfectly illustrates our ambition to position Luxembourg as a key player in industrial innovation in Europe.
Lex Delles, Minister of the Economy, SMEs, Energy & Tourism
OCSiAl’s nanotubes are already making an impact: they are used in more than 10% of smartphones sold globally and in over one million electric vehicles. The new Luxembourg hub will play a pivotal role in Europe’s industrial future, meeting global demand for advanced materials and enabling next-generation technologies.
Building skills for the future
The planned site in Differdange spans 3.63 hectares and will be developed in phases between 2028 and 2030. Once operational, it will become the world’s largest graphene nanotube production centre, designed as a scalable, energy-efficient manufacturing hub. The project is expected to create over 300 highly skilled jobs and serve as a development hub for engineers and scientists.
Luxembourg’s innovation ecosystem: A magnet for deeptech investment
This initiative follows a successful investment round with Luxembourg-based investors and a long-term land lease agreement with the State of Luxembourg. It reflects years of collaboration between OCSiAl and national authorities, combining private-sector innovation with public infrastructure support. Once complete, the Differdange hub will anchor Luxembourg’s advanced materials leadership and create new opportunities across Europe’s industrial future.
“The launch of this future production centre in Differdange perfectly illustrates our ambition to position Luxembourg as a key player in industrial innovation in Europe,” said Lex Delles, Minister of the Economy, SMEs, Energy & Tourism. “This major investment in graphene nanotubes demonstrates investors’ confidence in our ecosystem and highlights the potential of our business parks to host high-tech industrial projects. We are proud to support OCSiAl in this strategic step, which will contribute to the creation of skilled jobs, the reputation of Luxembourg in deep-tech, and the transition to a more sustainable and competitive industry.”
