Luxembourg’s new embassy in Seoul was inaugurated on 2 July 2024 during a government working visit to South Korea focusing on the economy and research.
Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, along with Minister of Digitisation, Minister of Research and Higher Education, Stéphanie Obertin, are on a working visit to the Republic of Korea emphasising economy and research collaboration.
The visit included the official inauguration of Luxembourg’s resident embassy in Seoul, attended by both ministers. Minister Bettel welcomed this opening as a step towards strengthening political, economic, cultural and research relations between the two countries. He also appreciated the Korean government’s decision to establish a resident embassy in Luxembourg.
These positive developments reflect the close relationship between Luxembourg and South Korea, both G20 members sharing democratic values.
In conjunction with the embassy opening, the Seoul Business Forum brought together thought leaders, entrepreneurs and government representatives from both nations to explore new collaboration opportunities. The forum showcased Luxembourg as launch pad to Europe for the Korean ICT and space ecosystems, with a particular emphasis on cybersecurity and the data economy.
Enhancing bilateral relations in research and innovation was an important objective of the working visit. The Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) signed memorandums of understanding with the City of Goyang and the National Cancer Centre (NCC) to establish research cooperation in precision and data-driven medicine, particularly for cancer patients care. Minister Obertin also visited the Samsung Medical Centre (SMC) and its Institute for Research into the Medicine of the Future as well as the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology.
